Naturopathy & Chiropractic Care

Sooooo...you have a sore back. Maybe you go to the chiropractor. Maybe alongside your sore back, you also are feeling stressed, have problems with digestion, feel tired for no reason, have been told by you GP that 'we are going to start keeping an eye on that blood pressure', or seem to be gaining weight for no obvious reason.

Maybe all these problems are linked, and maybe, by looking toward the root cause of the problem, we can begin to unwind the knots and layers of symptoms to get to the real stuff.

Naturopathy and Chiropractic medicine share many similarities. They are both guided by principles that recognise the body’s innate healing abilities, emphasise disease prevention through the maintenance of homeostasis and acknowledge that the body, mind and spirit work together as a whole, with every system inter-playing with each other.

T o be treated simultaneously by these two modalities means that the root cause of the problem can be addressed at multiple levels, leading to faster recovery and fully holistic and effective results.

For example, many people suffer from stress, anxiety or exhaustion, spending a disproportionate amount of time in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dominance, otherwise known as fight or flight. Complimentary, is our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), our ‘rest and digest’, or ‘feed and breed’ state.

Dominance of SNS can result in sub-optimal posture, tightness of muscles, back, neck and shoulder pain, propensity to injury and inflammation. SNS dominance can also result in impaired digestive health, resulting in leaky gut like symptoms, allergies and bloating, impaired hormonal health showing up in female fertility concerns such as irregular, painful or absent periods, inability to conceive and PMS; blood sugar imbalances, contributing to the development of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis; thyroid and auto-immune diseases, impaired or lowered immunity in general, the in-ability to lose weight or gain muscle mass, not to mention the detrimental effect on our mental health and well-being.

Naturopathic medicine can assist chiropractic care in addressing both the symptoms and root cause of SNS dominance through nutritional, herbal, lifestyle and energetic medicine.

Let’s go back to the example of digestion. A Naturopath may prescribe an appropriate probiotic to assist in the re-development of the impaired gut bacteria bought on or exacerbated by stress or poor diet; a herbal tonic to reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress and stimulate the gastric system in order to properly assimilate foods eaten; breathing exercises to help switch the body into PNS, dietary advice to reduce gut inflammation and improve absorption; and a nutraceutical to replenish key nutritional deficiencies that often occur in times of impaired digestion resulting from stress such as magnesium and B vitamins, which are consequently needed for energy, repair, hormonal function and neurotransmitters health.

As both Naturopathy and chiropractic treatment progresses, the body will shift gradually into a position of health and homeostasis, and the prescriptions and treatment can be reduced as the symptoms reduce due to the root cause or disturbing factors being addressed.

And how good would that be? No ongoing pills or last minute trip to the pharmacy, no more serious health issues, no concerned frowns the next time you visit the doctor - just a grater freedom and lightness in your body and spirit as everything begins to slide back into place.
